Betterview is proud to announce the appointment of Adam Nunes as our new Director of Sales. Adam may be familiar to many of you from his participation as a board member at the Society of Insurance Research and his roles throughout the insurance industry.
For those of you who are not familiar with Adam, we have posted a brief Q & A below so you can better get to know him.
Adam, how many years have you spent in the insurance industry?
I have 10+ years of experience in the insurance industry.
Can you tell us about your previous experience before joining Betterview?
I grew up in the insurance industry working at my family’s commercial brokerage. Back then, I was doing all sort of client administrative work. This work helped me to gain an understanding of insurance from the client, broker, and carrier perspective.
After I left my family’s brokerage, I spent some time as a producer at State Farm, specializing in small commercial insurance. Later, I moved to Asia to study abroad and work at a VC firm. Little did I know it at the time, but this experience gave me an opportunity to study the insurance landscape outside of the U.S.
When I came back to the U.S., I really wanted to be part of the InsurTech movement. My experience in InsurTech ranges from a benefits administration startup, consulting with carriers about the InsurTech space, to working at a commercial lines underwriting startup.
How does your previous experience tie into what you are doing at Betterview?
Great question, because there are a lot of similarities between insurance and other industries. From my personal experience, I would have to say two things:
1) My previous agency experience allowed me to see the customer journey first-hand when it came to purchasing insurance and coverage design, as well as learning how carriers conduct business. Every carrier conducts business differently. During my time as an agent, I had the opportunity to learn about the nuances of how carriers approach writing business by working with underwriters and regional territory managers.
2) At Mintel, I learned a lot about how companies look at data, and more importantly, how they can action off of data in an appropriate and measured way. My experience at Mintel ties in really well with what we are doing at Betterview, which is helping insurance carriers take action off of data.
What is your philosophy on InsurTech partnerships with Carriers?
I learned early on that insurance is a unique business, and every carrier conducts business differently. Unfortunately, due to the structure of insurance, carriers aren’t able to make rapid and sweeping changes to internal legacy processes.
When it comes to partnering with carriers, it’s essential to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. You need to take a consultative approach in order to gain a better understanding of their particular problems, understand the use case, and identify any potential issues. Once you have done that, then you can talk about a technology solution.
Taking this approach is a lot like painting a boat. The hard work is not painting the boat itself, it’s doing all of the prep work before painting. Once you have done all of the prep work, the painting part will go smoothly.
Could you tell me what attracted you to Betterview?
There were two things that attracted me to Betterview. First, Betterview’s Co-Founders had insurance and startup experience. Dave Tobias grew up in the insurance industry, like me, except he came from the loss control side. David Lyman founded a company that built social media software for small businesses, which he sold to Constant Contact. Being able to understand the problems the industry faced because you have lived them yourself goes a long way in building solutions that work. I believe this mix of insurance and startup experience gives Betterview a leg up in the marketplace.
Second, I liked Betterview’s intense focus on a specific problem. Five years ago, there was no solution to roof claims. Now using emerging technologies like computer vision and machine learning, Betterview is solving this problem. An Intense focus = big results!
I noticed you are a board member at the Society of Insurance Research. Could you tell me a little about why you joined?
When I went to my first SIR event, I loved how the members had a natural curiosity about helping move the insurance industry forward and their focus on professional development. One thing that stuck out to me was how members were willing to share best practices with their peers and provide them with insights into looking at old problems in new ways. After my first annual conference, I knew I wanted to be part of this community, so I took active steps to get involved at an organizational level.
What are your interests outside of work?
I am the father of a dog, and I am obsessed with improving my golf game! When I’m not playing with my dog or golfing, you’ll most likely find me spending time with my fiance, Rachel, trying new restaurants or reading about politics and philosophy.
What the best way to connect with you?
